Peter Talbot.
One early iteration, called a “power board”, was invented in 1972 by Australian electrical engineer Peter Talbot working under Frank Bannigan, Managing Director of Australian company Kambrook. The product was hugely successful, however, it was not patented and market share was eventually lost to other manufacturers.
How long do power boards last?
There’s no exact lifespan we can give you, and it varies from area to area — it depends how many surges occur in your area as well as how many joules your protector can absorb. Many people recommend replacing a surge protector every two years or so, but any recommendation like this one can only be a rule of thumb.
How does a power board work?
Power boards can turn a single electrical outlet, which can only hold one or two plugs, into one that can accommodate multiple plugs. While this sounds ideal – after all, you can plug in all those devices and not have to go searching for an outlet – it can be extremely dangerous if you overload the power board.

Is it OK to daisy chain power strips?
The proper use of a power strip usually does not cause a hazard. It’s the improper use that can cause safety issues, such as creating a potential electrical failure and/or a possible fire hazard. An example of using power strips unsafely is when they are “daisy chained” together.
How many watts can one outlet handle?
How Do You Know How Many Things You Can Plug Into One Outlet? As a rule of thumb, it’s safest to stick to a maximum load of 1,500 watts per outlet or circuit. The number of things you can plug into one outlet depends on the wattage of each device or appliance you want to plug in.
Can you connect 2 power strips together?
Power strips are not meant to be used in conjunction with one another. In fact, plugging multiple power strips together, which is known as “daisy-chaining,” is the quickest way to overload your electrical system—and it’s also dangerous and violates most fire safety codes.
