Cod have large mouths, so hook size may vary, but the bait need not be large—a good sized ocean clam will do for almost any size cod. Other good baits include strip baits of squid, fish, crabs, sand eels, and capelin.

Is cod easy to catch?
Cod are bottom-dwelling fish, so you won’t catch them near the surface of the water. Typically they inhabit depths of 200 to 1,300 feet. Because of their depth, it is typically easier to catch cod off a boat.
Can you catch cod with a rod and reel?
The rod and reel combo we recommend for cod should be capable of handling 50lb braid. The rod should be 6’6″-7’6″ with a fast to extra-fast action. Levelwind reels are certainly easier to use, but may present a handicap when dropping the bait down in fast currents (because the line goes out more slowly).
