Information for those coming to hearing

March 5th, 2017 – Info For Those Coming To The Hearing:

It is very strongly recommended that we:

Dress Professionally: this means suits, ties and our dressy clothing. The representatives from the utility companies will be dressed professionally and it is important for making an impression that we are too.

Bring Your Letters: If you have received letters from DTE or Consumers threatening you with action or shut off or actual shut off notices and/or if you have a doctors letter about your health and smart/opt-out meters, copy each of them and bring them to the hearing on Tuesday. We are going to formally collect them, print 25 copies of each, and present them to the Energy Committee.

Those Speaking: if you plan to speak, you can expect to have 3 minutes. We have been advised that all speakers follow the same speaking format below. Also due to the 90-minute meeting time, do not be discouraged if you do not get your chance to speak. Representative Glenn has shared that he will likely hold as many 90 minute hearings as necessary to provide everyone who wants to, the opportunity to speak.

Speaking Format:

State your name

State (briefly) professional qualifications, especially if applicable to subject

State your topic. Pick one topic to discuss (fires, privacy, homeowners rights, rates. “I am here today to talk about _______ and share my concerns.”

Provide 25 copies of the evidence for your claims/concerns and provide the sources of your evidence. Present to Committee Clerk prior to start of meeting for distribution to Committee Members as they listen to you speak.

Remember to stay right on point when speaking and try to stick to highlighting your main points, the points you want the legislators to take away from your testimony. Sometimes saying less is actually saying more.

Close with thanking them, letting them know that we need their help to preserve our rights here in Michigan and that you want them to support HB 4220.

Remember 3 minutes goes by very quickly!

Fill Out A Card To Speak: you can decline should you want if/when you are called. You can bet that a stack of 200 testimony cards will make a very powerful impression on the legislator and will be a very good talking point when the bill is heard in the whole house and senate.

If You Are Not Speaking:  please consider sharing your support for HB 4220 with the legislators in written letter or testimony Send it to: clerk Kevin Gawronski: kgawronski@house.mi.gov before Tuesday with the request that he forward it to each energy committee member. It would be helpful to consider using the speaking format listed above as a format for your written letter/testimony.

Make Your Calls: Before next Tuesday, please call one or more of the Energy Policy Committee members, especially the Democrats (D), and ask them to support HB 4220. Contact Info is below.

Info For Those NOT Coming To The Hearing:

Send In Your Letters: If you have received any letters from DTE or Consumers threatening you with action or shut off or actual shut off notices and/or if you have a doctor’s letter about your health and smart/opt-out meters and/or letters, copy each of them and send them to clerk Kevin Gawronski: kgawronski@house.mi.gov before Tuesday. We are going to formally present letters to the Energy Committee at the hearing.

Send In Written Testimony: please consider sharing your support for HB 4220 with the legislators in letters or written testimony. Send it to: clerk Kevin Gawronski: kgawronski@house.mi.gov before Tuesday with the request that he forward it to each energy committee member.
