What kind of hook do you use for drop shot?
The size 2 is the most commonly used hook for the drop shot technique.
Where do you put the split shot on a nymph rig?
You can so add split shots above streamers to add a jigging – up and down action when retrieved. Placing two split shots above the fly a few inches apart will allow the streamer to roll along the bottom like how a dead minnow or baitfish would.
How do tippet rings work?
A Tippet Ring is a small metal ring tied in-between the end of a Tapered Leader and the Tippet material. Using a tippet ring at this connection allows you to cut back the tippet without shortening the tapered leader every time a new fly is tied on.
Can you use live bait on a drop shot?
The drop-shot rig is best known for gently presenting soft-plastic lures, but with a few tweaks, the same setup can present live bait, especially minnows, to bass. For soft-plastic lures, tie a drop-shot hook in sizes No. 1 to 2/0, to your line with a Palomar knot, leaving the tag end long.
Do you cast a drop shot rig?
Drop-shotting is not just for deep-water situations, try casting a drop-shot rig at weed edges and around floating docks. I cast the drop-shot rig to just about every place I would cast any other sub-surface plastic bait for bass.
Can I use a circle hook for drop shot?
The key to drop-shotting is to maintain contact with the bottom. Unless the sonar is showing fish suspended high off the bottom – which requires a different technique – keep the sinker on the bottom and the bait just a 12 to 18 inches from the sinker. Using circle hooks means you don’t have to set the hook.
How far should the weight be from the hook on a drop shot?
Depending on the depth, the distance from the hook to the weight needs to be adjusted. For shallower water, it is recommended to place your hook three to six inches above the weight. For deeper water, the hook can be adjusted to nine inches from the weight to no more than a foot and a half because of the leverage.
Where do you put weight on a nymph rig?
The beadhead pattern will help get your rig to the bottom, but start with a little more weight, placed about one foot up the leader from the top fly. If you make four casts without ever feeling the flies tick the bottom, you need more weight.
How far should split shot be from Hook?
about 1 to 2 feet
Apply the shot about 1 to 2 feet up the line from the hook. Put on just enough weight to get your offering to the bottom or close to it in a slow decent. As a rule of thumb I put on enough weight to get my bait to the bottom in 30 seconds.
How far should split shot be from fly?
Loss of strike detection is valid, though, and there’s not much you can do about it. You can keep the shot close to your point fly to keep the loss to a minimum. I like 4-6 inches. (You can also drop-shot, but that’s a topic for another post.)
