How do you measure the size of a nut?
Stretch the tape measure across the nut’s diameter to the flat-side directly across from the one your pulling from. If the nut is metric, count the number of lines on the tape measure to find the measurement. If you count 9 lines, the size is a 9-mm (millimeter) nut.
How do you measure lock nut size?
If you measured at 50mm the size is 50 divided by 5, this gives us an 10 sized lock nut , 30mm would give us an 6 sized lock nut (30/5=6). To measure a lock nut simply measure it’s bore and then divide the measurement by 5.
How do I know what size nut I need for a bolt?
To measure the diameter of screws and bolts, you measure the distance from the outer thread on one side to the outer thread on the other side. This is called the major diameter and will usually be the proper size of the bolt.
Are nuts measured from the inside diameter?
Bolts commonly use four types of measurement, while nuts use only two. Bolts are measured in length of shank, bolt head size, width of shank (the diameter of the threaded bolt body) and the thread pitch (the size of the thread). Nuts are measured by the width of the hex shape and by their thread pitch.
What size nut is 10mm?
The situation on is almost as complex with metric nuts which come in a wide variety of types (full, thin, nyloc, castellated…..) and 5 strength grades as well as the same range of sizes.

How are nuts measured in cooking?
If the word ”chopped” comes before the ingredient when listed in a recipe, then chop the ingredient before measuring. If the word ”chopped” comes after the ingredient, then chop after measuring. Using your example of ”1 cup nuts, chopped,” you should measure 1 cup of nuts and then chop them.
What size is an M8 bolt?
So an M8 bolt would have a shaft diameter that’s slightly under 8mm which means that the bolt should fit through an 8mm hole.
Is Grade 8 or 12.9 stronger?
A head with no markings is Grade 2, one with 3 lines spaced 120 degrees is Grade 5, and 6 lines spaced at 60 degree intervals is Grade 8.
Table 1.
Grade/Class | Strength |
---|---|
Metric Class 10.9 | Similar to Grade 8. |
Metric Class 12.9 | The highest metric class for strength, it exceeds Grade 8. |
What is a grade 10 nut?
The ISO 898-2:2013 Grade 10 specification covers carbon steel nuts ranging from M-6 to M-64 diameter. We use high carbon steel material and high alloy steel raw materials to achieve the required properties of grade 10.
What is the difference between Grade 5 and Grade 8 bolts?
Grade 8 bolts have been hardened more than grade 5 bolts. Thus they are stronger and are used in demanding applications such as automotive suspensions. Grade 8 bolts have 6 evenly spaced radial lines on the head. Grade G is roughly equivalent to Grade 8.
What size nut uses a 12mm socket?
Size Chart

Do washers go on the nut or bolt side?
Unlike flat washers, which are placed on both the bolt and nut side, spring washers only go on the nut side of the fastener to establish a bond. A spring washer offers axial flexibility that’s intended to prevent loosening of the fastener with which it’s paired.
How do I know what size washer I need for bolts?
Match this outer diameter of a bolt to the inner diameter of a nut and a washer. For SAE nuts and bolts, diameters of 1/4 inch and smaller are listed with a # and a whole number (a bolt with a major diameter of 3/16 inch is a #10 bolt). Smaller numbers indicate smaller diameters.
What size is an M7 nut?

Is M8 the same as 8mm?
M8 is not exactly 8mm but it is sufficient from a non-engineering point of view as long as the thread pitch is correct. Luckily, most commonly available metric bolts have the same pitch. Regarding tolerance for common uses it can also often be ignored.
Are nuts measured by weight or volume?
Weighing nuts is the most precise way to measure, yet many recipes (most American recipes for sure) call for nuts by volume such as 1 cup or 1/2 cup.
