So let’s get started on putting some new valves on your radiator!
- Step 1 Remove The Old Valve. Begin by removing the old radiator valve and tail using the pump pliers and an adjustable spanner.
- Step 2 Cut The Olive.
- Step 3 Split & Remove The Olive.
- Step 4 Wrap Up Your New Valve Tail.
- Step 5 Insert Tail & Fit Valve.

Can you put thermostatic valves on old radiators?
Thermostatic valves can be fitted on any radiator, except the room where the main thermostat is located.
Can you fit TRVs to all radiators?
If your boiler is fitted with a flow meter that detects when all of your radiator valves are closed, you can install a TRV on every radiator if you want to. You can leave any radiator without a TRV, but it makes more sense for you to select the radiator in the room with your wall thermostat.
Can you put a TRV at the top of a radiator?
To work efficiently, a TRV needs a free flow of air to sense the air temperature around it.Installing the TRV to the top ensures better coverage of hot water through the radiator.
Which side do you fit a thermostatic radiator valve?
However, it’s always best practice to fit the TRV on the flow pipe that enters your radiator. If a non-bi-directional thermostatic valve is fitted to the return side of the radiator, it can make a loud vibrating noise when water tries to pass through it.
Are TRV heads Universal?
your t.r.v. heads are definety not universal, i carry 3 types, and there are a lot more.
Do I need a TRV on my radiator?
It’s always a good idea to fit some! We recommend you fit a thermostatic valve on every radiator. But there’s no need to fit one in a room with a fixed room thermostat.
Do you need a room thermostat if you have TRVs?
What heating controls should I have? Central heating systems, such as boilers and heat pumps, should as a minimum include a programmer (time control), at least one room thermostat and, if you have radiators, thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs).
Can TRV go on either side?
The vast majority of new TRV’s are bidirectional and can be fitted to either the flow or return, but it is always good practice to fit them to the flow side. If a non bidirectional TRV is fitted on the return side it will create a vibrating sound as the water tries to flow though it.
Do you bleed a radiator when it is on or off?
Turn off your heating. You can’t bleed a radiator when the heating is on, as it may be too hot to touch. You could also get hot water spraying out of the radiator. Use your radiator key to turn the valve at the top of the radiator.
Can TRV be fitted upside down?
Yes they can be installed upside down.
Can you fit radiator valves horizontally?
You can fit either way, the only difference between horizontal and vertical TRV’s is which way the display will be shown. When I first fitted mine 2 of the rads had vertical valves and those are the TRV’s I brought, several months later I turned the valves so they are now horizontal and they work just fine.
What is a lockshield valve?
Lockshield valves are the covered valves on a radiator, usually by a plastic cap which prevents them from being accidently altered. When a radiator is taking too long to warm up it might need the lockshield opening to allow a greater flow of water through.
Is it easy to fit a thermostat on a radiator?
A thermostatic radiator valve gives you more automation over the temperature at your home. To that, the device lowers your monthly energy bills. The fitting process is fast and simple, but there are some details you need to know to avoid damages.
Where is the valve on an old radiator?
Step 1: You’ll usually find the valve on a TRV radiator on the left side. The valve you’re looking for will have a numbered dial on it, to adjust the heat the radiator gives off, and is usually found on the bottom of the radiator. Step 2: To close the valve, turn the valve clockwise to 0 on the dial.
What is the difference between a lockshield and radiator valve?
The Lockshield valve restricts hot water flow to radiators to help balance the entire system as a whole. Other radiator valves can be used to help adjust the temperature of a radiator to help heat or cool a room.In doing so, you will be able to pick the radiator and radiator valve that is most suitable for your needs.
Which side of radiator is flow and return?
The flow of a radiator is typically on the left as you look at it stood up or attached to the wall.
Can I just replace the TRV head?
If you are swapping an old thermostatic valve for a new TRV, take the thermostatic head off both valves. You should be able to turn this to remove it by hand.
Can I replace TRV head?
Can be replaced without draining down. When fitting a new TRV head it is recommended that a new gland be fitted.
Do TRV heads fail?
Removing the head of the valve exposes the pin.It makes the valves easier to change. The thermostatic action of TRVs can also fail, so they don’t close down the flow through the radiator when the room gets too warm.
Can you fit TRV on towel radiator?
Why TRVs are not always recommended on towel rails
In theory, it’s completely possible to install a thermostatic radiator valve on a heated towel rail and in theory the process would be the same exactly as described above. The reason one radiator in your home needs to be TRV-free is as a safety mechanism.
