Are fiberglass columns good?
Fiberglass columns are a good choice if you need the columns to support the weight of a structure, like a porch roof. The term that refers to this ability is “load- bearing.” In addition to being load-bearing, most fiberglass columns are also weather resistant and insect proof.
Are fiberglass columns hollow?

Align the back edge of the fine-toothed hacksaw blade with the pencil mark. Slowly pull the hacksaw toward you and then away from you to cut into the fiberglass stick. Continuing cutting until you cut the fiberglass stick into two pieces. Pull the masking tape from the fiberglass stick to complete the cutting process.
Can PermaCast columns be cut?
Yes! Our round taper and no-taper, square, and craftsman fiberglass columns can be split to surround existing support posts. Our PermaLite®, RoughSawn®, and PermaCast® Recessed Panel columns cannot be split by HB&G.
Do you need special paint for fiberglass?
The Sunrise Window company recommends an acrylic latex paint for fiberglass. Acrylic paint adheres well to fiberglass, overcoming one of the main challenges to painting this material. Acrylic paint is less likely to crack and blister, and will hold up well to cleaning.
Can you paint a fiberglass pole?
For best results, paint exterior fiberglass fixtures when the temperature is between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. As with most painting jobs, painting the light pole is easier when you protect the areas you don’t want to accidentally paint.
How do you prepare fiberglass columns for painting?

- Use a damp cloth to thoroughly clean the column of any dirt or dust particles.
- The caps and bases will have small gaps between them and the column; make sure to caulk these areas.
- Use a 2″ or 3″ paintbrush to apply your primer.
- Lightly sand the entire column with 120-grit sand paper.
