Applying adjustments to a raw image is a non-destructive method of editing your photos, unlike editing a JPEG.
What do I do with RAW files?
RAW files need to be imported into a computer program like Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw and then either instantly exported as jpegs (yikes!) or perfected according to your vision for the image with editing and then exported as a jpg or other printer-friendly format.
Are RAW files worth keeping?
Simply put, yes as a professional photographer I hold onto all RAW keeper images forever.If the client never saw the photo in the first place, and the image is nearly identical to one of the keepers, then there’s definitely no reason to keep them around permanently.

How are RAW files processed?
Raw files contain the image data as it is captured by the camera’s sensor. Nothing is discarded, even when the image processor compresses the raw file to make it smaller. The compression is ‘lossless’ which means all of the original image data is usable by the photographer for subsequent editing.
Why do RAW photos look grainy?
Most in-camera jpeg engines increase contrast, saturation, and add some sharpening into the mix. Depending on what camera you use to produce your RAW files and what software you open them with on your computer, sometimes those in-camera settings are also applied to the RAW file when it is displayed.

It’s because when you shoot in JPEG mode, your camera applies sharpening, contrast, color saturation, and all sorts of little tweaks to create a fully processed, good-looking final image.

Do you delete your RAW photos?
So instead of deleting your raw file, keep hold of it. If you need to buy more drives, so be it. If you are positive that you’ll never really want to prove authenticity in such situations, then perhaps you can consider using just the DNG format. But, ultimately, I do not recommend deleting your original raw files.
Can I ask my photographer for RAW files?
Simply put, you don’t ask a professional photographer to give you their RAW photos because that would be giving you only half of an unfinished work of art.More so, by asking your photographer for their RAW unedited photos it means you don’t trust them to deliver an edited image you’ll love.

As you might expect, the tradeoff for these detailed files is that RAW files are quite a bit larger than JPEG files. Still, most professional photographers shoot in RAW because it gives them more information to work with in the post-processing phase.
