Does Balsam Separation Effect Images?

Separation does affect image quality, it’s just a matter of degrees and eventually it will be significant. It can be expensive to repair so may not be worth going through the process unless it’s a very valuable lens.

Does lens separation affect image quality?

Mild separation near the edges of the lens will have a very slight impact on image quality. Full separation is usually pretty disastrous as neither of the newly separated surfaces will be coated and more importantly one or other element will be out of alignment.

Can Balsam separation be repaired?

Put the element in an oven set to just above 300F (149C) for about 15 minutes. Then carefully slide the elements apart while they’re still hot. Another option is to use a hot plate (or equivalent). Watch for the balsam to melt.

Does Balsam separation get worse?

Most separation starts at the edges (not all), so center sharpness and contrast wont be affected much, but once it separated further, you probably will notice at least some loss in contrast. Flare will also be worse because of the new air gap created when the lenses separate.

What is Schneideritis?

Schneideritis is the common name for a kind of defect. The defect are bright spots in the black paint on some lens surfaces. The unused lens surfaces of better lens systems are blackened to minimize stray light.Brighter dots – but only where the lens is black. These dots are not somewhere without black paint.

WHAT IS lens haze?

Oily haze condenses inside the lens as zillions of tiny droplets, each too small to see, but bigger than the wavelengths of light. Because of this, oily haze diffuses the light to look like haloes over the bright parts of an image.

What is camera lens fungus?

Lens fungus is a combination of dust and moisture that finds its way into the interior elements of a camera lens. Dust by itself does not typically cause a problem, but if that dust contains fungus spores and is combined with moisture, fungus can grow.

Does Schneideritis affect image quality?

The “official” line is that Schneideritis is purely cosmetic. From my own experience I’ve used a 120mm, 240mm and a 300mm that all had a mild version of this affliction in both front and rear cells – resultno issues!

What causes lens separation?

Lens separation typically happens in older lenses. It can be caused by the breakdown of the cement or glue over time. Not storing lenses properly and leaving them in very hot conditions can contribute to the break down. Once the sep has started, it will continue to worsen over time.

How do you separate cemented lenses?

Usually it will take 20 to 40 minutes at 400 degrees F for the lens to separate. An alternate heating method is to place lenses in a vacuum coater and heating them under vacuum until they separate. Remove adhesive from glass surfaces now by immersing in the solvent combination.

Why should we use Canada balsam to glued lenses?

Answer: Due to its high optical quality and the similarity of its refractive index to that of crown glass (n = 1.55), purified and filtered Canada balsam was traditionally used in optics as an invisible-when-dry glue for glass, such as lens elements.

What does Haze look like?

Seen from afar (e.g. an approaching airplane) and depending on the direction of view with respect to the Sun, haze may appear brownish or bluish, while mist tends to be bluish grey. Whereas haze often is thought of as a phenomenon of dry air, mist formation is a phenomenon of humid air.

Can dust be removed from inside a lens?

Never, under any circumstances try to remove dust from inside lenses yourself. Disassembling your lens will not only void the warranty, but I can almost guarantee that you will not be able to assemble it back the way it was yourself.

How do you separate the elements of lenses?

If it’s just regular balsam glue, the tip I hear most often for separating LF elements (not that I’ve tried it), is to very gently and very slowly heat it up in the oven, that’ll loosen them enough to slip. Or acetone, but that’ll eat through the paint too (although in your case, that sounds like it’d be a good thing).

Can fungus be removed from a lens?

Removing Lens Fungus
A hydrogen peroxide blend with ammonia is a good method, as is a vinegar and water solution to remedy the fungus problem. Make sure you don’t delay, or you’ll need to have the lens professionally dismantled and cleaned, which will be expensive.

How much does it cost to remove fungus from a lens?

If it’s basic service that you are looking for, that is just getting the lens and body cleaned, it’s INR 1000 per device. In case your lens has fungus, it’s INR 450 extra for a basic clean up. Depending on the level of fungus, it can go higher from the base rate.

Can you clean lens fog?

Assuming the ‘fog’ is on the outside – just wipe it with a soft cloth, or piece of tissue. If it’s inside the lense – place it somewhere warm, so the moisture inside the lens will evaporate. Very gently.

Why is iPhone camera cloudy?

The simplest reason that your iPhone camera’s pictures are blurry is that you are not taking the shots with a steady hand. It’s fairly common when that happens. Keeping your hand perfectly steady as you’re trying to get a shot is actually more challenging than you might think.

How fast does fungus grow on lenses?

A pimple on you know what can develop in 24 hours, for a lens fungus it takes years. Fungus can bloom up in just a few days or weeks if conditions are right.

Does fungus in lenses spread?

Yes fungus can spread between lenses, so separate for infected lens from the rest and have it sit out with the iris fully opened and so the sun shines in. After days or weeks in the sun, still keep it away from the other lenses.

Should you buy a lens with fungus?

Because successful removal is un-predictable, I would never deliberately purchase a lens that has fungus except for mechanical “spare parts”. If you have the time and patience, and you are successful in removing the fungus and the result is a good lens, that’s luck. If not, nothing is lost but a little time and effort.
