Renogy DC to DC Battery Charger We recommend DC to DC chargers over isolators because they protect the vehicle’s alternator, and maximize the battery’s lifespan. DC to DC chargers provide a multi-stage charge to the house battery and push more charge current than an isolator.
Does a DCDC charger isolate?
Solar Enthusiast
I don’t know what the consequences if any would be if both were used but the Renogy DC-DC charger has isolation built in. It takes a positive current from the vehicle ignition switch to start charging. So if the ignition is off no current is drawn from the starter battery.
What is the difference between BCDC and DCDC Chargers?
A BCDC charger is a DCDC charger, the “BCDC ” is the start of the REDARC part number and means Battery Charger Direct Current , for example BCDC1225D. I trust this will point you in the right direction. If you have further queries, I recommend you call REDARC Technical Support on 08 83224848.
Do I need a VSR if I have a DCDC charger?
Any circuit that includes an auxiliary battery that needs to be charged from an alternator source needs a DCDC charger and not a VSR. The only real exception is vehicles with fixed output alternators that provide a constant output voltage over 14.2V and with a similar or same battery to the cranking battery.
Do you need an isolator for dual battery?
For correct operation, a dual battery setup needs a battery isolator.
How does Redarc battery isolator work?
The Redarc SB12 Dual Battery Isolator uses a microprocessor-controlled solenoid to protect your car’s starting battery from deep discharge while allowing your second deep cycle battery to power all non-essential loads including fridges, lights and all your other on-board 12V accessories.
Do I need a battery isolator?
A battery isolator helps to ensure that the starting battery has sufficient power to start the engine and recharge the batteries if, for example, loads on the auxiliary battery (e.g., refrigerator or navigation lights) cause it to be drained, or if an auxiliary battery fails.
Why do I need a DCDC charger?
DC to DC chargers increase the chance of your 12V batteries always being at close to a full charge. A DC to DC battery charger can minimize damage to your 12V battery system and prevent over-discharging when used correctly.
Can you run 2 DCDC Chargers?
It is possible to run two BCDC charger in the one vehicle, as a reference, please see the diagram in the link below which is a typical layout if a vehicle mounted and trailer mounted BCDC set up.
Do I need a solar regulator if I have a DCDC charger?
Unless your DC to DC charger has an inbuilt solar regulator, then yes you do require a solar regulator. Some people make the mistake of using a regulated panel, with a battery charger that has an in-built solar regulator to charge their battery.
Is a VSR an isolator?
When your engine is on and the start battery is sufficiently charged the isolator kit will begin charging the second (auxiliary) battery simultaneously.
Services that continue to operate as normal are Click & Collect and Express Delivery.

Does a VSR work with a smart alternator?
VSRs can also engage and disengage frequently with the large and rapid voltage changes from a smart alternator and so the high current contacts may fail prematurely.
Do you need a DCDC charger for dual battery?
A DCDC charger is integral to your dual battery setup. A quality one will often include a solar regulator too. This allows you to connect a solar panel directly to the charger to continue charging and maintain your battery even whilst the engine is off.
Are battery isolators bad for alternator?
An isolator will ensure that no battery drains the others in the system, offering key redundancy in a system that needs either multiple backups or several batteries on one alternator. However, the fact that isolators charge all batteries evenly may not be ideal for some applications.
Will dual batteries hurt my alternator?
You can run two batteries on the same alternator. Alternators protect against excessive current drain and aren’t affected by multiple batteries. When you connect the batteries, the voltage equalizes. This means that the lower voltage battery sucks power from the other.
What is dual battery isolator?
Dual Battery Isolators. Extend your vehicle’s battery life and ensure it remains charged with a REDARC dual battery isolator. Used as a solenoid priority system in a dual battery system, a multi battery isolator from REDARC will help you adventure further and for longer.
What does red light on REDARC mean?
It is not unusual for the red LED to stay on for some time after the vehicle has been turned off. It is not based on a timer but on voltage. It will stay on until the batteries have dropped to 12.7V.
How does REDARC SBI12 work?
The REDARC Smart Start® SBI12 is a 100A 12V microprocessor-controlled battery isolator which protects the start battery from excessive discharge, while allowing the auxiliary battery to supply charge to non-essential loads. Charge your auxiliary battery whilst driving. Protection against a flat start battery.
What is isolator used for?
Isolator is a manually operated mechanical switch that isolates the faulty section of substation. It is used to separate faulty section for repair from a healthy section in order to avoid the occurrance of severe faults. It is also called disconnector or disconnecting switch.
What does a isolator do?
An isolator is a device used for isolating a circuit or equipment from a source of power. An isolator is a mechanical switching device that, in the open position, allows for isolation of the input and output of a device.
What type of battery isolator do I need?
Look for a small plate with printing on your alternator indicating the maximum amperage (measured in Amperes) for your car system. The battery isolator that you select should have an amperage rating “equal to or greater than the peak current output” of your alternator.
