Do Batteries Need To Be Ul Listed?

Do my batteries need to be certified or listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL)? No. Recently, some OEM’s have begun using the claim that batteries must be certified by UL as an artificial barrier to protect their battery sales. There is no requirement to have UL Listings on battery packs and most OEMs do not do it.

What products must be UL listed?

Specifically, the equipment addressed by UL includes the following main categories:

  • Electrical components.
  • Electronic equipment.
  • Wire and cable.
  • Appliances.
  • IT.
  • Fire protection and fire suppression equipment.
  • Signalling alarms.
  • Equipment for use in hazardous locations.

What is UL listed battery?

Batteries with a UL Listing have been tested to meet nationally-recognized safety standards. They have been tested as complete final products, though complete components suitable for factory installation also can earn this designation.

Do batteries need CE marking?

Batteries do not radiate electromagnetic radiation and as such do not require CE testing.

Is UL certification required?

There is no law in the U.S. requiring UL certification. But commercial building and electrical codes as well as retailers may require it. And if you produce a product designed to meet specific safety criteria or it might pose a safety risk, you definitely need testing.

How do you know if your UL is listed?

Check the Label

  1. Look for the UL trademark!
  2. Right under the UL trademark, the word LISTED or CLASSIFIED will appear in all capital letters.
  3. Under LISTED/CLASSIFIED you will find what the product is.
  4. Most importantly, under the product identity is the control or issue number.

What is non UL Listed?

This product is Non UL, meaning it is not Underwriters Laboratories approved, which are standards for cable and wiring. Low voltage items do not require UL inspection.

Is IEC 62133 mandatory?
