The obvious answer to this question is whatever size you want. Truly you can use whatever yarn thickness you desire and also incorporate non-yarn items. However, when you are new to weaving picking out yarns for your weave can be daunting so I’m going to share my best recommendations.
What type of yarn do you use on a loom?
8/4 brassard cotton can be used with all loom types as both warp and weft, and is one of the most versatile cottons we carry. 8/4 is the standard yarn weight for warping frame looms and is compatible with a 12-dent reed on most rigid heddle looms (12.5 if you’re using Ashford) and floor looms.
Can I use knitting yarn for weaving?
You certainly can knit with weaving yarn, and weave with knitting yarns, but a little knowledge about the yarns and their purpose will help your knitting and weaving adventures be more successful. Knitting yarns and weaving yarns are not created equal.
What string do you use for weaving?
However if you’re just starting out weaving, I like to recommend using a thin cotton thread for your warp. I recommend this because cotton thread is really strong and will help support your weave once it’s off the loom.
Can you weave with cotton yarn?
Cotton is relatively easy to work with and can be used in any manner of weavings. It’s versatile enough to be used for clothing, towels, tapestries, and anything in between. It’s also one of my favorite weaving yarns to use and start new weavers out with.
Is acrylic yarn good for weaving?
Because they stretch a lot under tension, we don’t recommend acrylic knitting yarns for warp. If you must, the weft is okay, but an acrylic yarn will not bloom during the finishing process and may leave you with either an overly limp or overly stiff fabric.

Can you use the same yarn for warp and weft?
Usually, balanced plain weave, twills, and laces have a warp and weft yarn of the same or similar sizes. If you want to use 3/2 pearl cotton (three times thicker than 10/2 cotton) for the warp, you would need to sett it closer for a 10/2 weft than if you also used 3/2 as weft.
Can I use sewing thread for weaving?

I have been having a problem with tension and as I neared the end on the second mat (warped lenth for 4) the front ratchet kept popping loose.
