What Is The Kwikset Keyway?

The SC1 Keyway provides an avenue through which consumers can experience the convenience of patented SmartKey® technology, which allows locks to be rekeyed without taking the lock off the door or hiring a locksmith, and without worrying about lost or unreturned keys.

What is the keyway?

“Keyway” is the term for the shape of the interface between a lock and its key. It’s most clearly seen when you imagine the cross section of the “blade ” of a key.

How do I know what keyway type?

Look at the large end of the key (also called the bow). If the bow has straight sides and a triangle-shaped top (like a house), you probably have a KW1 keyway. If the key is diamond-shaped (narrower at the top and bottom and wide in the middle), you probably have a SC1 keyway.

Do all Kwikset locks have the same key?

The Smartkey locks are only compatible with Kwikset factory-cut keys or locksmith-generated keys carefully cut to factory specs. If you try to set the Smartkey lock to a non-spec key (or even a poorly-made duplicate Kwikset key) you risk messing up the lock.

Can Kwikset locks be rekeyed to any key?

You can rekey all of your locks to match an existing key when the locks all have the same keyway.So it is impossible to slide a Kwikset key into a Schlage lock and a Schlage key into a Kwikset lock. These two locks cannot be rekeyed to match an existing key of the other.
