You can take a look at the livewell pump to see how it’s plumbed, but the livewell will probably drain out back through the pump when it’s out of the water. There could possibly be a valve inline to turn off flow through the drain/fill hose near the pump also, but you’ll see it when you look at the pump.
How does livewell drain work?
The concept of an aerated livewell is pretty simple. A pump pulls water in through the hull and into the livewell. A drain allows the water to escape and be replaced. The aerator agitates the water to stimulate the oxygen in the water.
How do you drain a live bait tank?
Depending on how you set up the tank , the floor layout etc , when back at the ramp , it would be OK to drain onto the floor then out the bung hole. The other option is to have the drain plug in the bottom of the tank with a hose feeding out through the lower part of the transom.
Do you plug the livewell drain?
You should only have to plug the one that goes straight into the hull (no hose attached). There should be drain hoses out the sides. You should be sure that the hoses that provide water to the live wells are in good shape and the drain hoses as well.
Can you use a bilge pump for a livewell?
Install a Pump Box
Bilge pumps work here because they use the same motors and impellers as in centrifugal livewell pumps.
How does a livewell fill up?
There should only be two ways a well can fill up. One is with the pump through the spout, the other is due to gravity up the drain hole. Will fish for food!
How do you clean a stinky livewell?
Get a good scrub brush and start at the bottom and move onto the sides. Once you have scrubbed it down good, flush it out several times to remove all residue, debris and solution. Now you will have a livewell that looks and smells clean. Popping the lid open will be a much better experience now.

What size is a livewell drain plug?
Well-Known Member
The plug for the live well is a larger one (1 1/2″) that is hollow and more pliable than the small hard rubber ones. It also has a loop top so you can pull it out easy. This screws into the bottom of the livewell. The GW part number for the hard rubber fishbox drains is 11-124.
How do you pump water out of a livewell?
If you think it may be plugged, just take a hose and hold it up to the intake hole at the back of the boat and force water through the system to flush out the drain/fill hose into the livewell. If the water goes in it should come out. Should have a overflow tube that unscrews exposing the drain.
How long do live well pumps last?
