How Do You Cut A Steerer Tube Without A Guide?

Do I need to cut steerer?

You’ll need to trim your fork steerer if you’re fitting a new fork, building up a bike from a frame, or have just decided you really don’t need that spare inch that’s above the stem.

Can you cut a carbon steerer tube with a pipe cutter?

Yes, you can use this tool for aluminium and steel steerers. Benefit: you get a very straight cut. However, it usually leaves a lip that needs filing off to allow the spacers +stem to slide on nicely. This means it’s usually no faster than cutting with a hacksaw in a guide then filing the top square.

What if my steerer tube is too short?

You can put riser bars on it to raise the bar height. Make sure they are the same diameter clamp as the stem you have if you want to reuse it. You could also get a different stem with some rise on it if the bars won’t get you high enough.

Are all steerer tubes the same size?

Most steerer tubes will be 1 and 1/8th of an inch or 28.6mm some are 1 and 1/4 of an inch or 31.75mm but much rarer. Just measure the inside diameter of your existing stem by taking off the top cap.

Can you cut a Crown race?

The fork crown race is seated onto the fork crown. The fork crown may be machined for correct size with the CRC-1. The cutting process can take a long time if the crown race must be resized.

How long should my steerer tube be?

The steerer tube must not be so long as to protrude from the top of the stem, preventing the headset from being tightened, but also must be long enough to allow for enough clamping contact with the stem.

Can you replace a steerer tube?

If you have cut your fork steerer too short, got a new frame or bought a second hand fork we can fit a new steerer tube rather than buy a new CSU or fork.

What is a fork crown race?

There is a crown race installed at the base of your fork’s steerer tube – a crown race is an angled surface, or race, that interfaces with the bottom bearing.

Can you use a pipe cutter on carbon fiber?

Condensed answer: Technically, a pipe cutter can cut carbon bars, but the practice isn’t recommended because the handlebars can be damaged in the process.

How are MTB steerer tubes measured?

You need to measure it in two places. The outside diameter (OD) of the top section (where the stem clamps around, as in the above pic) and the outside diameter of the very bottom bit where the steerer goes into the fork crown (where the headset crown race sits, as in the pic below).

How does stem height affect handling?

Registered. A longer stem tends to slow down handling a bit, shorter stems the opposite (think about the stem as a radius going through an arc — a longer stem swoops a larger arc for the same angle). This has a small effect for much riding, where bike lean does most of the steering.

What difference does a shorter stem make?

Shorter stems correctly orientate a rider’s forward-leaning weight directly over the front axle, which has a range of benefits by mass-pressuring the wheel when descending. The result is truer steering response and better tyre grip in dusty or muddy terrain.

How Short Can I cut my steerer tube?

It’s important that the steerer tube is cut at least 5mm shorter than the top of the highest headset spacer. Now my scratch mark will be 5mm below the top of where the 10mm stem spacer was originally placed.

Is it safe to extend a steerer tube?

(LBS guy, answering confidently) – “Oh, it’s very safe.” (Me) – “I don’t think it is.” I went and mentioned to the store manager that those steerer tubes are limited to about 5 cm extension, or else the torque on them could crack them and cause a failure.

Are steerer tube extenders safe?

Steerer extenders should never go on carbon steerers because the stakes of the steerer failing without warning are too great; even in the case of a carbon steerer that was cut too short, they should be avoided because of the extra stress their pinch bolts put on the steerer.

Will a tapered steerer fit my bike?

In most cases, yes. However; with the introduction of certain models from Cane Creek, tapered forks can be run in two straight head tubes.

How many spacers should a headset have?

Generally, most bikes have 20 to 30mm of headset spacers that can be moved freely above or below the stem.

Do you need a spacer above stem?

The extension above the stem clamp can be as little as 1mm. Obviously, you need to put a spacer above the stem clamp that extends above it by at least 3mm to allow the top cap to push down on the stem via the spacer; otherwise, the top cap would bottom out on the steerer.

Do forks come with Crown race?

The crown race is the only thing that separates the headtube and fork. Without it, the headtube (of the frame) and fork will sit flush against each other.

Are Crown races headset specific?

NO! Not all headset cups and crown races are the same. There are different angles on the bearings both the inner and outer surfaces. You need to make sure that the cups and races match the bearings.
