This British website has a good summary of this important paper by Andrew Goldsworthy explaining the detailed mechanism many scientists believe allows non thermal (weak) electromagnetic fields to cause very serious health problems by robbing cell membranes of calcium and breaking down the blood-brain barrier. The paper is a summary of the current scientific literature and references many peer reviewed original research articles from peer reviewed journals. Dr. Hillman draws interesting parallels between animal studies on effects of EMF and published research showing similar EMF effects on humans. Most studies of such effects on humans report effects in qualitative but not quantitative terms. The study of how milk production in cows is reduced by EMF stress provides a unique way to quantify such effects.

Poor power quality, also known as dirty electricity, refers primarily to a combination of harmonics and transients generated primarily by electronic devices and by non-linear loads. We have assumed, until recently, that this form of energy is not biologically active.
